Introduction

Perugia Train Station, the main site serving the city of Perugia and the Perugia commune, is located in central Umbria, Italy. Opened in 1866, it is part of the Foligno-Terontola railway, which also connects Florence and Rome. The train station is located in the Vittorio Veneto square in the densely populated Fontivi district, about 3 km southwest of the city centre.

The station is currently managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). However, the commercial area of the passenger terminal is managed by Centostazioni. The train service is operated by Trenitalia or on behalf of Trenitalia. These companies are subsidiaries of the Italian state-owned railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS).

To the city center

When you are driving on platform 1 of Perugia Station, do not walk into the station building, but turn left towards Perugia-Mini-Metro.

Starting from platform 1, a series of stepless slopes are ideal for wheeled luggage and direct access to the “Fontigge” mini metro station. Although less than a 3-minute walk from Perugia Station, the Fontivegge underground station is not particularly easy to find.

Once you reach the Fontivegge mini subway station, you can easily understand the ticket vending machine, stairs and elevators leading to the platform. The Mini-Metro is a personnel-driven system that departs every 1-2 minutes.

Perugia (, also US: , Italian: [peˈruːdʒa] ; Latin: Perusia) is the capital city of both the region of Umbria in central Italy, crossed by the river Tiber, and of the province of Perugia. The city is located about 164 kilometres (102 miles) north of Rome and 148 km (92 miles) southeast of Florence. It covers a high hilltop and part of the valleys around the area. The region of Umbria is bordered by Tuscany, Lazio, and Marche.

The history of Perugia goes back to the Etruscan period; Perugia was one of the main Etruscan cities. The city is also known as the universities town, with the University of Perugia founded in 1308 (about 34,000 students), the University for Foreigners (5,000 students), and some smaller colleges such as the Academy of Fine Arts "Pietro Vannucci" (Italian: Accademia di Belle Arti "Pietro Vannucci") public athenaeum founded in 1573, the Perugia University Institute of Linguistic Mediation for translators and interpreters, the Music Conservatory of Perugia, founded in 1788, and other institutes. Perugia is also a well-known cultural and artistic centre of Italy. The city hosts multiple annual festivals and events, e.g., the Eurochocolate Festival (October), the Umbria Jazz Festival (July), and the International Journalism Festival (in April), and is associated with multiple notable people in the arts. The famous painter Pietro Vannucci, nicknamed Perugino, was a native of Città della Pieve, near Perugia. He decorated the local Sala del Cambio with a beautiful series of frescoes; eight of his pictures can also be admired in the National Gallery of Umbria.Perugino was the teacher of Raphael, the great Renaissance artist who produced five paintings in Perugia (today no longer in the city) and one fresco. Another famous painter, Pinturicchio, lived in Perugia. Galeazzo Alessi is the most famous architect from Perugia. The city's symbol is the griffin, which can be seen in the form of plaques and statues on buildings around the city.
